What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a common health problem. It develops when glucose (sugar) in the body is unable to enter the body's cells to be used for energy. The glucose therefore remains and builds up in the blood.

The signs and symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Increased thirst and increased need to urinate
  • Weight loss
  • Extreme tiredness

Who is at risk?

A number of factors increase your chances of getting the most common form of diabetes (type 2), including:

  • Being overweight
  • Having a family history of diabetes
  • Having high blood pressure
