Diabetes care in Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire

Obesity clinic

Specialist clinic for obese patients with or without diabetes

It is recognised that bariatric surgery can result in sustained, significant weight loss in those who struggle with obesity. The obesity clinic offers a multidisciplinary assessment and management programme designed to help patients with weight loss and to identify patients who may benefit from bariatric surgery. Patients will be seen by an endocrinologist specialising in the management of medical problems associated with obesity, a specialist nurse, a specialist dietitian and a clinical psychologist. They will be enrolled in a structured weight loss programme. Those patients identified as being suitable for bariatric surgery will subsequently be assessed by one of the specialist surgeons, and an anaesthetist with an expertise in bariatric surgery.

Referral

Referrals can be made directly via Choose and Book to the Obesity clinic at West Berkshire Community Hospital.

Referral Criteria

  • BMI > 40 with no co-morbidity
  • BMI > 35 with serious co-morbidity

The following conditions are accepted as meeting the definition of serious co-morbidity

    • Established ischaemic heart disease
    • Type 2 diabetes requiring medication
    • Sleep apnoea
    • Severe uncontrolled hypertension
    • History of transient ischaemic attack or stroke
    • Benign intracranial hypertension
    • Severe lower limb major joint disease requiring orthopaedic intervention which is precluded on safety grounds due to the patient’s BMI

Prior to referral, it may be helpful to consider the following conditions which must also be met before a patient will qualify for surgery

    • The patient has engaged in the structured weight loss programme
    • All available non-surgical measures have been tried for at least 6 months, but have failed to achieve or maintain at least 10% weight loss
    • There are no specific contraindications and the patient is fit for surgery
    • The patient has realistic expectations of the outcome of surgery, and understands that cosmetic plastic surgery procedures to remove excess skin folds will not be funded by the NHS
    • The patient understands that long-term commitment to treatment is required to ensure a sustained successful outcome
